An Account of Surprising Kindness: When a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Ground
During the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to arrange a place to stay upon arrival, yet upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and all the backpackers hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.
As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could just sleep at the terminal – only to discover the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes 24 hours. Unsure of how to proceed and growing worried, I boarded a city-bound bus and began walking near a gaming venue, thinking I could pass those hours in an establishment operating 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for acing an interview the next day, yet, as a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
The world needs more folks with such compassion.
It seems I seemed lost as a female student spotted me walking aimlessly through the city center and wondered whether I needed help. I explained the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the floor of her dormitory at the local university – which was perfect, as that’s where the important interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided a meal: one of the filled rolls she brought back her part-time job. I had access to a hot shower and somewhere safe and safe to spend the night.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me what a big chance she took as a woman letting a man who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. In those days I existed within my male privilege bubble and was oblivious to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not study at ANU, and I never saw her again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of human compassion. I hope life has repaid her good deed abundantly. We could all use more folks who show such kindness.
