The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
