Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
