Educator Slain and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at Nigerian School

Security breach at learning center
Educational institutions in Nigeria's northern region have often been targeted for armed groups

Armed assailants have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The armed faction breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on Monday, officials stated.

The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their living quarters, an official report indicated.

A school employee was lost their life while safeguarding the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.

Local residents disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into nearby bushland.

The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and vigilante groups" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.

In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who routinely perform seizures to request monetary settlements or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, leaving families in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.

Safety emergency in Nigeria's northern territories has escalated dramatically in the last several months, with educational institutions suffering the most of the unrest.
