New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police shared security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
