Prison Shock: The Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison
He fought the law and justice prevailed.
A couple of months after receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “annihilate” the nation's political system, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last looks jail-bound.
Expected Incarceration
The convicted coup-monger – who has been under house arrest in his estate while a series of court processes and appeals proceed – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the coming days, during increasing rumors that he will be transferred to a well-known high-security prison.
Previous Statements on Convicts
During Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the conservative former military man showed scant compassion for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“For what reason must we give these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They ought to simply be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to end up behind bars, the only thing required is not sexual assault, abduction or theft.”
Prison Facility Speculation
But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, several of whom this week inspected the facility in an apparent attempt to discourage the judiciary from sending him there.
The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, stated he expected the septuagenarian leader to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe gut issues – the consequence of a life-threatening assault during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – signified it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His health is extremely serious. He will not be able to manage if they send him to Papuda … It could be awful,” he added, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the condition of jail cuisine.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells accommodating forty detainees: “That is practically one square metre per prisoner.
“We spoke to the convicts and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the terrible cuisine,” added the senator.
Supporters Speak Out
Lucas is not the sole person speaking out before the one-time head of state's anticipated incarceration.
Writing in a leading publication, a different supporter, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” public service and asserted Brazil was about to witness “the biggest political injustice in its history”.
“It is an unfairness that eats away the souls of countless people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.
Divided Popular Opinion
That may be accurate considering the considerable following Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. But his anticipated imprisonment has also pleased the hearts of numerous other people who believe he should be incarcerated for conspiring to block the elected leader from becoming president – and also plotting to have him murdered.
The lawmaker, a politician for the sitting leader's allied group, stated: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. No one wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to get dignified care – but dignified handling while incarcerated. He can’t continue being his personal jailer for his entire life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time celebrating the tough handling of convicts, had unexpectedly become aware to their entitlements. “Only now has the extreme right – which has always argued that basic rights should not be for offenders – chosen to inspect a jail to discover what situations are truly like,” he said.
“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “shameful, degrading conduct”.
Likely Jail Conditions
In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently contains about thousands of prisoners, his expected location looks to be a nearby jail for law enforcement and other “particular” inmates known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
The accommodations are much more pleasant than those in the main prison, although still a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while living in the impressive leader's home, about a short distance away.
According to reports, the room Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – roughly the area of two parking spaces – and includes a 130 square foot restroom with a shower and a 12 square meter veranda. “He could be permitted to have a television and additionally a minibar in his quarters as long as they were provided by his relatives,” sources stated.
Partisan Comments
He denounced the rumoured idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “a form of retaliation” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will rule on his outcome in the {
