The remains of a 34-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter have been found inside freezing appliances in an residence in the western part of Austria.

The victims, a woman from Syria and her child, who had been unaccounted for for several months, were uncovered on the end of last week. The freezers were concealed behind a false wall in the flat, situated in the city of Innsbruck.

Two individuals, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were taken into custody in June. The elder brother, a colleague of the female victim, stated to police last week that there had been an incident—but rejected murder.

Addressing reporters previously, a official for the state prosecutor stated the pair were being detained on "serious suspicion of homicide".

The names of those concerned have not been disclosed by authorities, in following local legislation.

The vanishing of the mother and child was originally brought to light by the female victim's relative, who lives in Germany, on July 25, 2024.

Investigators said the 55-year-old suspect told them at the time she had gone on an long journey with her daughter to see her family in the nation of Turkey.

The victim's bank card was then noted as being active abroad repeatedly.

However when police searched the woman's home, her mobile phone was found.

Someone also reported overhearing a commotion in the dwelling, and screams of "mama" on the day the mother and child were presumed to have gone missing.

An expanded official inquiry was started, with investigators discovering various messages sent from the woman's phone—including a job termination message to her workplace and texts to the male associate.

Officials said a significant cash transfer was also moved to the man.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office told the press on that day that a storage unit had been rented out before the vanishing and a cooling unit had been positioned inside.

The two suspects removed the freezer from the facility on the date the woman and her child went missing, Tersch revealed. And a week later, they obtained a second unit.

Officials say they think this suggests the demise were intentionally orchestrated.

"The reason for their demise remains unclear due to the advanced decay of the victims," the official commented.

The prosecutor's spokesman—from the legal authorities—stated the precise timeline is yet to be determined, but the remains were professionally hidden and went unnoticed during a previous house search.

While the suspects were detained in the summer, it was only on November 12 that the elder brother acknowledged an occurrence and to concealing the remains. He rejects any intent to kill, investigators said.

Meanwhile, his brother admitted to a cover-up but rejected involvement in a killing.

The two suspects are presently in custody awaiting trial in detention centers in separate locations, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.

Through a combined announcement, the nation's official for women's affairs and Justice Minister said the "alleged double murder... symbolizes the sudden and brutal end of two individuals and uncovers a heartless setup".

"Female individuals are being murdered due to the simple reality that they are female," they went on to say.

"Femicides are a strongly established and issue affecting all of society that we must fight resolutely."
