Slot Provides No Excuses and Vows to Find Route Out of Slump
Arne Slot declared he had to “examine my own performance” after Liverpool suffered a sixth defeat in 7 English top-flight games at home against Forest and affirmed he would find a solution from the title holders' poor run.
Nottingham Forest, fighting against the drop before kick off, delivered the biggest win at Anfield in their club records as the Merseyside club fell to an eighth loss in eleven fixtures in every tournament. The British record signing, the Swedish striker, was again unnoticeable and the home side contended Murillo’s first goal should have been disallowed for comparable grounds to the captain's chalked-off goal versus Manchester City before the national team pause. But the manager conceded the responsibility stopped with him and offered no alibis.
“Nobody wants to listen to me now talking about refereeing decisions if you are defeated 3-0 at home to Forest,” stated the Reds' boss. “I should look at myself first and my team, but it does show you how a score can alter the momentum of a game. Before I was just hoping for us to score a strike. Afterwards we barely generated any chances.
“Of course there is a path forward, especially with the quality footballers we have. Regardless if you triumph or are beaten when you reflect you are always thinking: ‘In which areas can we do better, in what aspects can we adjust?’ but that is different from doubting yourself.
“I wish to emphasise I am accountable for the current defeats. You are responsible when you are winning but also responsible when you are losing. I can never come up with enough reasons for us to have the results we have. That is not good enough and I am responsible for that.”
The team's performance unravelled as the coach introduced several offensive changes when chasing the match. “It was the identical on the road at Forest the previous campaign,” he remarked. “I took the French defender off and brought on [Diogo] Jota and he scored straight away to equalize at 1-1. Then it was courageous, currently it’s probably unwise.”
Liverpool previously were defeated in back-to-back home league games against Nottingham Forest in the sixties. The last time they suffered back-to-back top-flight games by a three-goal margin was in the mid-60s.
Slot said: “It was very bad. Competing on home soil, losing 3-0 no matter which opponent you face is a very, very bad outcome. Unexpected if you look at the opening 30 minutes of the match. I haven’t seen us creating so much in the initial half-hour perhaps the entire season, and the initial occasion they entered in our box they found the back of the net.
“It wasn’t against Manchester City, but in every other fixture we have been the controlling side and were capable to generate chances. Recently it is nearly consistently that we fail to convert our opportunities and the ones we concede find the net.”
