Stupidity and Monarchical Hubris Damaged Andrew, and It Could Continue Yet

This episode commenced with a isolated photograph, perhaps the most impactful ever taken of a member of the monarchy.

There stood the Duke of York, arm-in-arm a teenage girl, while another individual beamed knowingly in the background.

Absent that snapshot, taken at a gathering in 2001, few would have credited the claims of a young woman who declared she was moved across the Atlantic and obliged to have brief sexual encounters with a individual of the monarchy?

A strange, indicative action by someone who had openly asserted to have no been aware of her, said he could no have had intimate contact with her, and yet provided a large amount of family resources to settle a long-delayed lawsuit.

Years of Scandal

Considering this, conversations of the monarchy acting firmly to sever ties with Andrew are wide of the mark. This affair has endured for the better part of 15 years since that image, and a further snapshot of Andrew ambling amiably with a notorious individual emerged.

  • Hubris: How long did his brothers and sisters, possibly even his relatives, understand that Andrew was so presumptuous?
  • Questionable Associations: They must have known, if his aides and the police were performing their duties, that he had some deeply disreputable companions given he publicly hosted them to royal residences.
  • Monetary Excess: If the monarchy did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his overspending with state resources.

Travel were listed in official documents: private aircraft transfers from the palace to a sporting venue and back again in time for midday meal, private flights instead of regular transport, all for the benefit of "the travel enthusiast".

World of Deference

Then there was the entitlement which expected deference when he walked into a space or the supreme obsession about his designations used on his correspondence in communication to his associates.

He managed to escape consequences while his parent, who inexplicably indulged him, was still surviving. The sovereign did at least remove him of royal responsibilities and ceremonial ranks in the aftermath of his ill-fated and, as revealed, deceptive public statement six years ago.

Recent Developments

Merely in the last fortnight that events sped up, following the issuance of accounts giving more disturbing particulars of his actions and that of his associates.

More information have again exposed Andrew's belief that he could avoid being untruthful about his relationship with a notorious figure.

The public (and the press) were far in advance of the royals. There was nobody of any consequence to speak up for him, a outcome of all those years of arrogance.

Institutional Fears

The more astute monarchical figures realized that. The key objective is to hand down the institution, if not as before at least complete and unblemished.

Over time the last 190 years trying to undo the reputation of past sovereigns, demonstrating they are beneficial, responsible and attentive to their citizens.

His actions endangered all that in peril in an age when deference and discretion is no longer adequate.

Aftermath

Finally, the well-known indecisive sovereign was prodded more. There was no other option. The institution had lost control of the narrative.

Presently the removal of honorifics and the persistent and lifetime public humiliation that will afflict Andrew most deeply.

  • Demotion: Reduced to just a private citizen
  • Past Example: The primary monarch to lose his honorifics in recent history
  • Naval Career: Especially hurtful given his duty in the engagement

He continues to be a royal advisor, on paper able to act for the king, and he is still in the lineage to the monarchy, but not any of these will actually occur.

What Lies Ahead

Do individuals he comes across still acknowledge him? Could they still slip up and call him Your Highness? Would they say Mr,

Certainly, he is not moving to suburbia, but to the monarchy's large estate at a royal residence.

In that place, he will be furnished by the king with one of the royal residences and given some sort of financial support.

It is not his prior accommodation, where he paid a nominal payment for more than 20 years, and the area is a bit remote, but even so it may not be sufficiently removed.

Pending Matters

Matters remain unresolved. There are still files in the custody of US Congress to be made public.

  • Governmental Scrutiny: Might lawmakers seek further action
  • Fiscal Review: Or scrutinize the misuse of state resources
  • Criminal Investigation: There may even be a criminal probe into his behavior

Possibly for the moment the reputational impact to the institution is contained. The statement from the palace was clearly that the removal of honorifics was what the monarch, and especially other senior royals, sought.

A Shift in Position

The cessation of deception that Andrew was acting willingly. And, notably, the short announcement showed plainly that the royals were siding with the accuser's narrative of occurrences.

Furthermore, for the premiere occasion they ultimately showed concern for the affected individuals: "The measures are judged required, notwithstanding the reality that he maintains his innocence of the allegations against him."

In the end it is presumption, selfishness and laziness that will destroy the crown. In his stupidity, self-gratification and greed, Andrew seems never to have grasped that lesson.
