The Gruesome Animated Movie Ending That Stays With Fans
Among every adult-oriented animated films I’ve personally viewed, nothing has remained with me as much as the fear-filled finale of the graphically gory and overwhelingly transgressive film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, the Spain-based filmmaker crafted a grim, bleak , frequently brutal world that included several minor , desolate twinges of hope.
While The Unicorn Wars feels like it originated from an impulse to advance animation even more, the director clarified that it was actually a try to convey a widespread, cross-cultural message concerning “the mutual source of all wars.”
This theme is conveyed by means of a band of colorful pastel bears , openly inspired by a famous series of lovable characters.
Maturing in a society built around militarism and the military-industrial complex, many of these creatures are fixated on exterminating the mythical beasts, due to a religious scripture that claims them they were once masters of the woods, before the horned beings drove them out.
A few did not entirely fallen for the indoctrination, and prefer to try out narcotics and engage sexually in the forest.
In contrast to their gentle equivalents, these bright beings display genitals , clear libidos.
For one notably brutal, skeptical animal, the bear named Bluey, the conflict against unicorns turns into a route to power — and particularly to supremacy over his softer, kinder brother the bear Tubby.
This bear is a bully and an obvious psychopath , and as terror overcomes his unit and kills his fellow soldiers sequentially, he seizes increasingly control on his own behalf, in increasingly bloody, damaging approaches.
At the same time, the horned creatures are suffering their own terror, in the form of a spreading, harmful creature in their woods.
“In the early stages, it feels like a comedy,” the director said. “Yet it turns into a more intense and sad movie. And in the finale, it becomes a horror film.”
The Unicorn Wars starts out similar to one of the most whimsical features from an iconic animator, that uncover a wicked pleasure in letting drawn beings swear, engage in violence, or have intimate relations.
Then it evolves into closer to a more grim work from that director, featuring progressively visual gore and a tangible link to the real suffering of war.
By the end, it becomes a full-on extreme drama bloodbath.
The terror which makes the film a perfect Halloween movie starts much sooner than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore gorehounds, for fans of extreme cinema who desire to watch a movie they have not viewed until now, and who can handle a narrative that pulls no restraint.
View it with the lights off free from interruptions, and the conclusion will burrow deep within you and linger.
