The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.

But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.

The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
