The Red Devils Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

The forward, with six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
