While Sunbathers Ran From Violence, Viral Image Captures Rescuer Dashing ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the iconic coast as her personal space. On a recent weekend evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, noticed pops reverberating through the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I considered it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Exiting her apartment, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw made it clear something was wrong.

Positioned on the street, conversing with a couple who had hurried up the incline soaked, she became aware of someone moving up from behind. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, dashing in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. It was just him heading in the direction that all the others was trying to flee, while holding that sizeable pack and barefoot … He was sprinting towards something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to run in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism Amidst Crisis

The photograph that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous moments of courage in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, officers and medical teams treating dozens of those hurt.

Collective Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the local area, with the patrol base adjacent to the location of the attack serving as a makeshift treatment center. It was shared that colleagues were also seen taking action, such as rushing into the ocean to assist people needing help.

Following the tragedy, messages of support were shared. A social media message shared thanks for the individuals who exhibited that “kindness will always triumph over hatred”.

The team of lifeguards issued a statement, noting they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your supportive sentiments and support. We are overwhelmed by the compassion for our team,” the team stated. “In time, we will tell our tales in the aim that it aids those impacted.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional lifeguards, remarked that the team rose to the occasion from the moment the shooting started right into late that evening.

“We have heard so many emotional narratives, but the widely-circulated picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is incredible,” stated a local official.

“These individuals demonstrate selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous shores safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on that day should be commended.
