Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
